Department

Erasmus School of Law (ESL)

The fundamental premise underlying academic research conducted at ESL is that law cannot be considered in splendid isolation or as an end in itself. It is imbedded in an economic and social context that shapes law. At the same time, law itself shapes society and defines economic relationships. In line with this vision, the mission of ESL is to conduct innovative research on the function of law in its economic and social context. ESL research has a strong social and business-driven orientation. ESL is committed to promoting international and interdisciplinary research. More information on the ESL research programmes, can be found at: https://www.eur.nl/esl/research/programmes/.

As a leader in the field of development studies and based in the Hague, ISS contributes to finding responses to today’s global problems. Issues such as poverty, inequality, migration, conflict and ecology are important in the ISS research agenda. Its Global Development and Social Justice research programme takes an explicitly critical approach to policy responses that are formulated to social, economic and political issues, including – through its Governance, Law and Social Justice (GLSJ) Group – a critical, law and development approach. Research performed by members of the GLSJ group studies how and to what extent particular governance arrangements help or hinder the achievement of goals of social justice. More information on the GLSJ groups is available at: https://www.iss.nl/en/research/research-groups/governance-law-and-social-justice
