Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is our goal to make significant contributions to mastering the global challenges of mankind in the fields of energy, mobility, and information. For this, more than 9.000 employees of KIT cooperate in a broad range of disciplines in research, academic education, and innovation.

The Institute for Applied Materials – Materials Science and Engineering (IAM-WK), offers from 1. April 2023, limited to 36 months

PhD positions (f/m/d)

within the Research Training Group 2561 "MatCom-ComMat: Materials Compounds from Composite Materials for Applications in Extreme Conditions"

The Research Training Group (RTG 2561) MatCom-ComMat: Materials Compounds from Composite Materials for Applications in Extreme Conditions is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) since April 2020. Starting with the 2nd cohort in April 2023 we offer up to twelve PhD positions at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Technical University Darmstadt (TUDa) and Dechema Research Institute in Frankfurt.

The scope of the RTG relates to the development, characterization and modelling of novel, revolutionary multi-phase composite systems capable of withstanding temperatures substantially beyond 1,300°C and harsh environmental conditions (e.g., oxidative, corrosive, erosive atmospheres) as far as mechanical behaviour, environmental resistance and durability are concerned. This is achieved by a materials combination consisting of metallic/intermetallic alloys based on refractory metals as substrates and polymer-derived ceramic nanocomposites based on Si(Metal)CON.

The doctoral researchers will be supervised / trained by teams of highly qualified scientists amongst the three institutions and will be able to take advantage of their complementary expertise by visiting the partner institutions for extended periods. Likewise, stays abroad at internationally known academic institutions are encouraged.

Personal qualification:

Successful candidates should have completed their master studies in the fields of materials science, mechanical or chemical engineering, or physics/chemistry. Candidates from closely related fields are also welcome.

We offer you an attractive and modern workplace with access to the excellent equipment of the KIT, a varied work, a wide range of training opportunities, flexible working time models, an allowance for the job ticket BW and a casino/cafeteria.

As KIT wishes to increase the proportion of female professors, applications from qualified women are particularly encouraged.

Recognized severely disabled persons will be preferred if they are equally qualified.

Please send your complete professional CV, including your educational background and experience as well as a brief statement of your research interests using the vacancy number 2249/2022 and the reference number 6 to the speaker of the GRK, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Heilmaier: martin.heilmaier@kit.edu. For further information, please contact Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Heilmaier, email: martin.heilmaier@kit.edu.

Applicants will be accepted until positions are filled up.

Processing of your personal data by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) will be subject to this Privacy Policy.
