  • Develop, and operate sophisticated optical sensing solutions based on Lasers, Optical Fibers and other Advanced Photonics Technologies from the Mid Infrared to the vacuum UV.
  • Participate in several strategic and client-based R&D project to deliver novel optical sensing solutions pushing the limits of the current state of the art, bringing advanced spectroscopy techniques from the lab to the factory floor and in the house (TRL 1-8).
  • Support Senior staff and colleagues in defining and elaborating new strategic research lines, perform the necessary Scientific and Technology Scouting, and acquiring the necessary hardware.
  • Work in close contact with the engineering staff towards prototyping, data acquisition and automation development.


  • Recent PhD degree in Physics or Optical Engineering with particular focus on several of the following topics: Optics and Photonics technologies, Spectroscopy, Nonlinear Optics and Photonics, Radiation-Matter Interaction, Optical System design.
  • Alternatively, Master´s Degrees with minimum of 4 years of verifiable, relevant work experience in private or public R&D position.
  • Verifiable hands-on lab experience working in any of the fields of Laser Systems, Advanced Spectroscopies, Fiber Optics, Imaging Techniques and Photonics, Imaging and Sensing.
  • In particular, hands-on experience in one or more of following field is highly desirable: Ultrashort Laser and Amplifiers; Photonic Crystal Fibers and Fiber Sensing, Fiber Handling and Design, Photonics Systems, Nonlinear Optical Techniques and Spectroscopies, Micro-optical assembly, Microfluidics and Optofluidics.
  • Inquisitive mind, open to remain up to date with the latest advancements in Optics Photonics Laser sources and Spectroscopy.
  • Publication record on Peer Reviewed journals in any of the above-mentioned field highly desirable.
  • Passion for accurate data analysis and modeling of physical phenomena. Machine Learning experience desirable.
  • Familiarity with Numerical Simulation Methods in Optics and Photonics desirable. Prior knowledge of one or more of the simulation suites such as COMSOL, Zemax, or similar. Experience in developing own simulation code / scripting desirable.
  • Good programming knowledge in one or more of the following: LabView, C++, Python, Matlab, Windows and Linux environment.
  • Team worker; Proactive, Can-do attitude; Interested in the theoretical as well as the technical aspects of science and open to work independently as well as in small teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Familiar with Office tools (Word, Excel, …).
  • Familiarity with project managing desirable.

This position is subject to the Collective Agreement for employees in non-university research (Research CA) starting in occupational group E (E1 salary = EUR 3.274, paid 14 times a year). For this position we offer competitive salaries and additional benefits based on your experience and qualifications, starting with a minimum salary of EUR 56.000 (annual, based on an All-in contract and bonus).


Bringing together applied science and industry, SAL offers research in the areas of Sensor Systems, Intelligent Wireless Systems, Power Electronics and Embedded Systems. This position will be located within the Photonics System Research Unit in the Sensor System division. There, diverse teams of scientists and engineers design and operate highly sophisticated photonic sensing solutions to real world problems. Accessing to both private and public research funding, SAL offers its researchers access to cutting edge scientific and analytic technologies in laser physics, optical fibers solutions, advanced spectroscopies, quantum optics, micro-optics and imaging technologies.
