The subject of Social Work is located at the School of Social Sciences, and offers a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, and Master’s and doctoral level education. The subject of Police Studies is located at the School of Police Studies and offers the Police Education programme and Bachelor’s courses in Police Studies.

Job description
Associate senior lecturers are offered conditions conducive to obtaining the necessary research and teaching qualifications for promotion to senior lecturer. This position includes research in Police Studies at 70% of full time, specialising in the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe, as well as teaching and departmental duties at 30% of full time. A halfway evaluation will be performed to support and follow up the qualification process. As associate senior lecturer you must complete a course in higher education pedagogy worth at least 7.5 credits, if you have not previously done so. Your research duties include conducting your own research, applications for research funding and participation in the academic community. Educational duties may include teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, supervision, course development and external collaboration. The position requires active and collegial participation in the academic environment at Södertörn University.

Teaching should include teaching on the Police Education programme and in Social Work, through lectures, seminars, supervision and examination. Your duties will also include course administration, responsibility for educational development work, cooperation with and between courses and actively conducting research, as well as actively promoting development at the School of Social Sciences and the School of Police Studies as regards education and research, focusing on Baltic Sea/Eastern European research, and cooperating with other stakeholders nationally and internationally. Administrative duties are also included (such as participation in meetings at the school and department, reporting grades and timetabling courses).

The position as associate senior lecturer also includes collaboration with other academic schools and public authorities. Teaching is conducted in Swedish and English. An associate senior lecturer who does not have the ability to teach in Swedish must acquire this during the period of employment.

Qualifications
You are qualified for employment as an associate senior lecturer in Social Work, specialising in Police Studies, if you have been awarded a PhD in the research field of Police Studies or a closely related subject such as Social Work, Sociology or Criminology, or have the equivalent research expertise, and can demonstrate teaching expertise in areas of Social Science relevant to Police Studies. For this position, you must have conducted research in the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe relevant to the field of Police Studies.

Primary consideration should be given to someone who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise in the five years prior to the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. However, in exceptional circumstances, someone who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances. The applicant must otherwise have the personal skills necessary to do their job well and to represent the university in a way that benefits its activities. For this position, you must be able to teach in Swedish and/or English.

Research expertise is demonstrated through scholarly publications in the relevant subject area, participation in research projects, research collaborations, and contributions to the development of the subject.

Teaching expertise is demonstrated through documented experience of teaching and a self-reflective approach to student learning and experience and your own role as a teacher.

Grounds for assessment
The assessment criteria for appointment as a senior lecturer are the levels of expertise required as qualification for employment. For this position, scholarly expertise is of more importance than teaching expertise. The following grounds for assessment have been established for this position (in order of importance): The below items must be documented. 

  • Research plan. The research plan must include: a description of the planned research, research cooperation and networks and other planned activities relevant to the position (max 25,000 characters).
  • Teaching expertise in the field of Social Science relevant to Police Studies and Social Work.
  • Good cooperation skills.
  • Administrative skills.

Promotion from associate senior lecturer to senior lecturer

Promotion to senior lecturer
A person who is employed as an associate senior lecturer must, after applying and at least six months prior to the end of their period of employment, be promoted to senior lecturer if they are qualified for such as position and fulfil the specific grounds for assessment that must be applied to promotions to senior lecturer. Such a promotion entails employment until further notice as a senior lecturer.

The following specific grounds for assessment have been established for this position (in order of importance): The below items must be documented.

  • Research expertise in Social Work specialising in Police Studies with clear links to the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe. Particular emphasis is placed on scholarly publications of a high quality, participation in research projects, research partnerships, and contributions to the subject’s development.
  • Considerable progression in research during the associate senior lectureship compared to when the position was applied for.
  • The ability to teach in Swedish and English.
  • Good cooperation skills.
  • Administrative skills.

Employment
This position is full time and for a fixed term of six years. First date of employment as agreed.
