The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The Mountain Hydrology and Mass Movement research unit investigates natural hazard processes in mountainous terrains, including landslides and debris flows. Starting in March 2023, we are seeking for a

PhD Student for Mass Movement Monitoring with Distributed Acoustic Sensing 80 - 100 % (w/m/d)

The position will be part of the Doctoral Network “Studying the Earth’s surface with seismic methods” (EnvSeis) funded by the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. Bringing together 10 leading research groups from seven countries, EnvSeis supports 12 early-stage researchers in the emerging field of environmental seismology, in which seismic methods are used to study processes at or near the Earth's surface, such as landslides, river sediment transport, debris flows, and glacial and marine processes. WSL hosts the EnvSeis Project “Debris Flow Monitoring with Distributed Acoustic Sensing”. All EnvSeis projects are connected by common methodology and joint training and networking activities. More information can be found on the project website www.envseis.eu.

The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree in applied mathematics, physics, computer science or an earth science discipline and be willing to participate in fieldwork in Alpine terrain. A solid background in time series processing is necessary. Experience in machine learning is a plus. Moreover, knowledge in a high-level programming language like Python or MATLAB is required. Publications of scientific results in geoscience is a crucial part of the responsibilities. Within this position English proficiency as well as the ability to work in a dynamic team are indispensable. The PhD student is expected to communicate research results at scientific conferences and spend 6 months at Umeå University (Sweden) in the context of a project secondment visit. Importantly: the candidate must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date.
Please send your complete application to Beatrice Lamprecht, Human Resources WSL, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered.
