Update Jun 23, 2021: The second selection round has been done in June 2021. Based on that, new teams will be built in August 2021 (estimated). Next selection round deadline will be Sep 15, 2021. You can leave your application during the summer and we will contact you as soon as we start building new teams.

Tampere Universities are looking to strengthen their ecosystem of entrepreneurship and innovation activities. We are now seeking business developers to support the commercialisation of innovations that are born out of our research.

Business developers

We are looking for business developers who will be responsible for exploring and developing avenues for the commercialisation of ideas and innovations resulting from research undertaken at Tampere Universities. The business developers will work in close collaboration with our researchers and research groups as part of a team.

There are a number of commercialisation projects underway or in the pipeline at Tampere Universities, with 4-6 new projects launched every year. Either Research to Business (R2B) funding provided by Business Finland or other commercialisation grants have been secured or sought for these projects to accelerate the commercialisation of research ideas and results.

(Read more about Business Finland’s R2B funding: https://www.businessfinland.fi/en/for-finnish-customers/services/funding/cooperation-between-companies-and-research-organizations/research-to-business

R2B activities are carried out to support the building of new scalable businesses with national and international potential. The specialists in our Innovation Services also provide support for the preparation and execution of R2B projects and technology transfer from the University to industry.

Job description

In your role as business developer, you will be responsible for the preparations ahead of the commercialisation of a research-based innovation. Your duties will include customer analysis, market research, the productization of business ideas, the identification of further funding opportunities and the preparations for product launch.

You will also lead the team members in their pursuit of entrepreneurship.

We are looking for candidates with experience of the commercialisation of new ideas and research-to-business marketing. You will need to be familiar with the start-up environment and growth funding (private & public) and have the ability to work effectively with others.

A broad network of contacts in the target markets as well as prior experience of research commercialisation (New Business from Research Ideas TUTLI/R2B) is appreciated.

You will be inspired and motivated by the possibility to launch a new business and have the ability to support your colleagues’ work by setting an example for the rest of the team. You will enjoy collaborating and engaging in analytical discussions with potential future customers and funding providers. Candidates should also have a good command of spoken and written English.

We offer

We offer you a unique opportunity to become a part of a world-class research commercialisation team. Your role as business developer will place you in an excellent position to become a shareholder or otherwise involved in the company that may be launched as a result of the commercialisation project.

You will join a motivated team and have a key role in helping to turn a research idea into an international business. Meet us and read our career stories.

Appointment will be made on a fixed-term basis for approximately 1.5–2 years. The salary and fees will be negotiated separately with the successful candidate.

How to apply

Applications are openly invited on a rolling basis. We will review all applications to build a pool of talent and match candidates with business development roles when new opportunities arise in our ongoing or upcoming commercialisation projects. The selections will be made in accordance with Tampere University’s recruitment procedures. When candidates are interviewed for a position in a new commercialisation project, the core team members involved in the project will also attend the interviews.

Business Finland invites proposals for R2B funding twice a year in March and September. We will start putting together new teams and preparing grant proposals when the call for proposals is approaching. The next grant cycle and team formation process will take place in January and February 2021. The projects that receive funding will be launched in summer 2021.

Please submit your application through our online recruitment system (link below). As an attachment, provide your CV and a cover letter describing your skills and what you can contribute to the commercialisation projects. Your application is valid for three years. We will inform you about the status of the process according to the grant cycle, approximately twice a year.
