PhD Candidate in Digital Collaboration in Building and Construction Projects

The position

The Department of Building, Energy and Material Technology, has a PhD position vacant from September 1st 2019 for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD).

The position belongs to the Department of Building, Energy and Material Technology (IBEM) at UiT- the Arctic university of Norway. We offers pre-courses for engineering education, the 1st year of all engineering courses given by the faculty and three years bachelor's degree in construction with partial online support.

The core activity of the department is education, research and dissemination within building-related engineering. The Institute's overall objective is to contribute to sustainable development in the region and the High North. We provide engineering expertise in building and construction industry at a national and international level, and we have a strong link to the business sector in the region. The department has activities in Narvik, Alta and Mo i Rana, as well as web-based education. The department has 36 employees and approximately 400 students.

The project

The position is linked to the establishment of the Visualization Center in the Arctic (ViA) which officially opens in April 2019. ViA is a laboratory that facilitates digital and visual interaction between different actors in a building process through, among other things, being able to produce 3D models of buildings in scale 1: 1. The center also facilitates collaboration between education, public administration and business and will be a central facility within the activity at IBEM-Alta, where building information modeling (BIM) is now established as part of the bachelor program in building and construction. There is currently a rapid development within BIM in Norway as well as internationally and there is therefore a number of thematic areas that the work can be aimed at, for example (but not limited to):

digital representation of buildings and building elements, standardization of digital representations and phases/steps in building processes/decision processes, methodology using 3D facilities with composite user groups, automation of comparisons against requirements specification, increased learning and more active forms of learning through different forms of digitization and simulation.

Applicants are requested to prepare a 3-5 page project sketch on a proposed PhD project. The project sketch should contain background and knowledge status, issue, possible methodical approach, the project's relevance and relevant partners. The project sketch is considered a mandatory attachment. The PhD project must be well-grounded in the development and use of BIM within building/construction-relevant issues.

Qualification requirements

For the position, a master's degree in engineering is required, possibly another relevant master's degree, which provides the basis for admission to the faculty’s PhD program. The average grade on the master’s degree must be B or better.

The position will especially be assigned to teaching in BIM-related topics, but depending on competence and needs it may be relevant to teach other topics.

A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the research fellow has already completed parts of his/her research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.
