The Department of Building, Energy and Material Technology, has a PhD position vacant from September 1st 2019 for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD).
The position belongs to the Department of Building, Energy and Material Technology (IBEM) at UiT- the Arctic university of Norway. We offers pre-courses for engineering education, the 1st year of all engineering courses given by the faculty and three years bachelor's degree in construction with partial online support.
The core activity of the department is education, research and dissemination within building-related engineering. The Institute's overall objective is to contribute to sustainable development in the region and the High North. We provide engineering expertise in building and construction industry at a national and international level, and we have a strong link to the business sector in the region. The department has activities in Narvik, Alta and Mo i Rana, as well as web-based education. The department has 36 employees and approximately 400 students.
The position is linked to the establishment of the Visualization Center in the Arctic (ViA) which officially opens in April 2019. ViA is a laboratory that facilitates digital and visual interaction between different actors in a building process through, among other things, being able to produce 3D models of buildings in scale 1: 1. The center also facilitates collaboration between education, public administration and business and will be a central facility within the activity at IBEM-Alta, where building information modeling (BIM) is now established as part of the bachelor program in building and construction. There is currently a rapid development within BIM in Norway as well as internationally and there is therefore a number of thematic areas that the work can be aimed at, for example (but not limited to):
digital representation of buildings and building elements, standardization of digital representations and phases/steps in building processes/decision processes, methodology using 3D facilities with composite user groups, automation of comparisons against requirements specification, increased learning and more active forms of learning through different forms of digitization and simulation.
Applicants are requested to prepare a 3-5 page project sketch on a proposed PhD project. The project sketch should contain background and knowledge status, issue, possible methodical approach, the project's relevance and relevant partners. The project sketch is considered a mandatory attachment. The PhD project must be well-grounded in the development and use of BIM within building/construction-relevant issues.
For the position, a master's degree in engineering is required, possibly another relevant master's degree, which provides the basis for admission to the faculty’s PhD program. The average grade on the master’s degree must be B or better.
In addition, he/she be able to document proficiency in English and a Scandinavian language at a satisfactory oral and written level.

The normal period of employment is four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year, distributed as 25 % of each year, shall be used for teaching or other duties for the university, cf. Guidelines for the research fellow’s duties.
The position will especially be assigned to teaching in BIM-related topics, but depending on competence and needs it may be relevant to teach other topics.
A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the research fellow has already completed parts of his/her research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position (PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like) in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.
Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
In Finnmark there is an arrangement which allows you to have parts of your loan at the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund remitted.
The appointment is for a period of four years with the objective of completion research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the faculty’s PhD program is a prerequisite for employment, and the program period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD Candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment.
