The Research Group Personal Rights and Property Rights (PR2) of the Faculty of Law has the following full-time vacancy:

research manager (postdoctoral level) in the field of civil law


As a research manager, you will be part of the Academic Assistant Staff (Dutch: Assisterend Academisch Personeel, AAP). The position includes the following tasks:

  • You strengthen the research culture and environment of the Research Group Personal Rights and Property Rights and optimize the visibility, uptake and impact of the research activities.
  • You support the research group in operationalizing its research & outreach policy. You will proactively identify new and diverse channels for financing research. You offer information, advise and support to the elaboration of research proposals and you will coordinate the follow-up of project proposals involving different (senior) researchers. You also write your own research proposals and compete for external funding. You enhance the cooperation between different researchers, and you constitute a bridge between (future) researchers and (senior) staff members of the research group. You take an active role in the organization and proper functioning of the research group in cooperation with the spokesperson of the research group.
    • You enhance the internal coherence and external branding of the research group. You assist in shaping the communication strategy of the research group. You coordinate the website and the social media activities of the research group.
    • You co-organize academic events.
  • You develop your own high-quality scientific research in line with at least one and preferably several research lines of the Research Group Personal Rights & Property Rights. You prepare publications.
  • Your limited teaching assignment evolves along with the study programmes. You independently teach a methodological course unit in the master of laws programme and act as an assessor for theses in the field of personal rights & property rights.
  • You take on internal and external assignments of scientific and social services.


  • You hold an PhD in Law (preferably) or another field of social and human sciences with a demonstrable affinity with law by the time of employment.
  • You submit a short note (3.000 words max.) identifying the most relevant channels for research finance for a research group in the field of civil law and the most important challenges to enhance the visibility, uptake and impact of research carried out by the research group.

The prior conditions are conditions of admissibility.

  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You have a demonstrable interest in research in the field of (civil) law and you are familiar with different research channels.
  • You are acquainted with the diversity of possibilities for financing research, and you have experience with writing successful proposals and/or supporting academic research projects.
  • You have excellent writing skills and strong communication skills.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • If you do not master Dutch, the administrative language of the university, you should be willing to obtain an CEFR A2 level of proficiency in Dutch within two years of appointment. As you will take on a teaching duty as a course unit coordinator, you can demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in the language of instruction. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members on an integration trajectory and offers tailor-made language coaching in compliance with Flanders’ statutory language regulations.
  • You are motivated to work actively on your further professional development.

What we offer

  • We offer an appointment as a principal research fellow for a period of three years. This appointment can be renewed once after positive evaluation and in function of the strategic objectives of the faculty.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a principal research fellow (Academic Assistant Staff, AAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • The planned start date is 15 September 2023 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • You will do most of your work at the City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
