A challenging and highly varied doctoral student position is available in the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Vienna.The position is expected to lead to a doctoral degree in chemistry after four years and is primarily focused on research, but may include a limited teaching requirement.



Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 30.0 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
The project focuses on the development of biological photolithography for the efficient and ultra-large-scale synthesis of nucleic acid libraries. The libraries, consisting of DNA, RNA and engineered non-natural nucleic acid analogues, are synthesized for applications in data storage, gene assembly, nanobiotechnology, and for analyzing bioaffinity interactions. . Further, the successful candidate will assist in writing of publications, and in institutional, teaching and research-associated activities. A doctoral thesis agreement has to be signed within the first 2-18 months. Furthermore, the candidate will have to teach courses independently to the extent specified in the collective agreement.

Profile:
Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
Experience in synthetic chemistry and analytical techniques (e.g. HPLC)


High motivation and commitment to basic scientific research.
Experience in working with nucleic acids, as well as sequencing experience would be advantageous. Ability to work carefully and methodically with very sensitive biological materials and complex equipment. Interest in photolithography, including optical and engineering aspects. Ideally experience in NMR and MS. Excellent communication skills in English and German. Experience with teaching as well as knowledge of university procedures and structures, preliminary experience with scientific work and ideally international experience is desirable.
