Postdoctoral Fellowship in the European Civilization Chair

This full-time position is advertised for a one-year period, starting on 1 October 2024, or as soon as possible afterwards, with the possibility of the contract being extended. 

Essential:

  • a doctorate in History or a closely related discipline, awarded within the last eight years;*
  • a track record of research in Central and/or Eastern European history, with refereed publications;
  • experience of university-level teaching;
  • a very good command of written and spoken English;
  • the ability to make the case for History to students;
  • teamworking skills 

Desirable:

  • a good command of French;
  • experience of university-level administration. 

The successful applicant will be entrusted with the following principal tasks:

  • supporting the Chair’s ongoing development of a specialization in Central Europe as well as a historical foundation for European Interdisciplinary Studies at Natolin;
  • supporting students of the College of Europe in Natolin writing Master’s theses in the field of European History and Civilization;
  • assessing Master’s theses in in the field of European History and Civilization;
  • supporting the preparation and realization of historical simulation games within the European Interdisciplinary Studies programme at the College of Europe in Natolin.
  • coordinating the organization of extracurricular events by the European Civilization Chair, including mentoring a student historical society;
  • contributing to the preparation and delivery of a second-semester study visit for students;
  • conducting and publishing research in the field of empires and nations in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Central Europe. 

The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Chairholder, Professor Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski. Approximately two thirds of the Fellow’s work time will be spent on supporting the Chair’s provision of broadly understood curricular and extra-curricular education and outreach, with about one third devoted to research.

The College of Europe at Natolin offers an excellent working environment, an internationally competitive salary, and an employment contract under Polish law.
