Remuneration: Remuneration is in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector - Federal Government (TVöD-Bund)

Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e. V.; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 12,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and make them adaptable, safe and sustainable. In close cooperation with partners from research, industry and other maritime security stakeholders, we combine technological innovation with practical expertise and offer you the opportunity to work on pioneering projects.

What to expect

As part of our institute, you will lead an existing team of young researchers working on maritime civil security simulations. The position focuses on constructive simulations, in which simulated agents operate simulated systems. Such simulations are used to:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of security equipment, such as sensors and platforms
  • Analyse operational concepts for the use of this equipment and train operators

The topic brings together several areas of expertise. We are developing a simulation environment based on a game engine to represent maritime security equipment and operational scenarios. In addition, we are researching approaches in which the behaviour of individual agents in the simulation is based on machine learning models trained using reinforcement learning.

Your task

  • Providing technical guidance for the development of constructive simulation software for applications in maritime security
  • Conducting research on the use and development of constructive simulations for maritime security applications
  • Managing research and development projects
  • Supporting and mentoring researchers within the team
  • Contributing to project planning and the acquisition of third-party funding

You will have the opportunity to conduct your own research in these areas while also contributing to the further development and leadership of the existing team. DLR plans its work through internally and externally funded projects. Therefore, project planning and support in acquiring third-party funding will also be part of your responsibilities.

Your profile

  • A completed university degree (Master’s / Diploma) in Computer Science or other relevant fields of study
  • Relevant research experience (at least 2–3 years) in the field of simulation or agent-based modelling, for example acquired through a doctorate or other proven research activities
  • Advanced user-level knowledge of programming languages, such as C++ and Python
  • Experience in software development
  • Knowledge in project planning
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams
  • Experience with third-party funded projects, such as EU funding programmes or national research funding

Remuneration is based on qualifications and the scope of duties and may reach up to pay grade 14 under the TVöD.

We offer

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.

We look forward to getting to know you!
