Background
The research in the Computational Mathematics group is inspired by real life applications. The topics addressed here appear as mathematical models in energy, environmental engineering, aerodynamics, biosystems, geochemistry or ‑physics, and include processes like flow or reactive transport. The development of accurate mathematical models and of efficient numerical discretisation/linearisation schemes, relying on mathematically rigorous arguments, is one of the key research topics in the group.

Job content
As a doctoral fellow, you conduct research in the field of mathematical modelling and numerical methods for two-phase flow. You write and publish research articles, contribute to national and international conferences and build an international network. You conduct your research under the guidance of an international team with the aim of obtaining a PhD.

You are part of the Computational Mathematics research group in the Mathematics and Statistics department and the Data Science Institute. You will work in an international team involving researchers from, amongst others,  The Netherlands, Germany, Norway and the United Kingdom. You will develop, analyze and implement efficient numerical discretisation schemes for two-phase flows. The exact focus of the research will always be chosen in consultation with your supervisor, depending on your profile and interests.
You will participate in the Doctoral School of Sciences & Technology, and will have ongoing opportunities for further professionalization and specialization. In addition, you will visit research partners abroad and contribute to teaching assignments to a limited extent.

Profile

  • You have obtained a master's degree in Mathematics (or equivalent)
Final-year students are (likewise) encouraged to apply.
  • You have achieved excellent study results.
  • You are interested in doing research in applied and numerical mathematics, in particular in the mathematical modelling and numerical simulations for two-phase flows.
  • You are able to present and report on project results clearly.
  • You work proactively and accurately, ensuring a high‑quality end result.
  • You are cooperative and can work well in an international team
  • You are fluent in written and oral communication, in Dutch and English.
  • You are willing to go on short trips abroad.

Offer
You will be appointed and paid as PhD student.
We bieden jou een doctoraatsbeurs aan voor twee jaar. Dit kan verlengd worden met twee jaar na een positieve tussentijdse evaluatie door de doctoraatscommissie.

Selection procedure
You can only apply online up to and including 10 August 2026.
The selection procedure consists of a preselection based on application file and an interview.
