Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

Division

The Rantalainen group is focused on application of machine learning and AI for development and validation of predictive models for cancer precision medicine, with a particular focus computational pathology. Our research is based on large and high-dimensional datasets across multiple modalities, including molecular, clinical and histopathology imaging data. Our computational pathology research is based on internationally leading and unique in-house study materials and datasets (>300,000 gigapixel histopathology images and clinical information currently available). The group is leading multiple national and international consortia in the area of AI-based computational pathology.

This is a role of 1 year with possibility of extension for 1 year. Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden.

Duties and profile

This postdoctoral project is focused on applied AI-based computer vision and precision cancer medicine research centered on histopathology image data. As a postdoctoral researcher you will be involved with development and validation of AI/deep learning solutions for precision medicine and patient stratification (patient outcome prediction), contribute to development of new methodologies and strategies in the domain, and write research publications. The project is based on unique and internationally leading large in-house datasets.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a PhD in AI-based computational pathology, or related field, with experience in development or application of deep learning methodologies. Knowledge and expertise in computational pathology, cancer precision medicine and epidemiology is advantageous. The CHIME (Cancer Histopathology IMage Epidemiology) project focuses on large-scale studies integrating histopathology image data and clinical information.

Applicants must hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in a relevant field and have expertise in modern computer vision and AI research. Experience with biomedical data analysis, Python programming, and deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) is expected. Prior work in cancer research or medical imaging is an asset.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team that has collaborations with clinical departments and national/international research groups. They should be able to work independently and in a team, manage tasks effectively, and possess excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

For further information please contact Senior Lecturer Mattias Rantalainen (email: [email protected])

Entry requirements

Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their postdoctoral research in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Here, we conduct innovative medical research and provide the largest range of biomedical education in Sweden. At KI, you get to meet researchers working with a wide range of specialisms and methods, giving you ample opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with the various scientific fields within medicine and health. It is the crossover collaborations, which have pushed KI to where it is today, at the forefront of global research. Several of the people you meet in healthcare are educated at KI. A close relationship with the health care providers is important for creating groundbreaking top quality education and research. Students and employees have free access to our modern gym facilities with trained staff on site.

Location: Solna Campus

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
