Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

The research group

Our research group studies psychiatric epidemiology using the world’s largest twin registry, and data from the entire Swedish population. This international research group includes epidemiologists, behavioral geneticists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and statisticians. The group is based at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, where the PhD student will also be based.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

In 2017, nociplastic pain was formally recognized as a chronic condition. It is characterized by widespread body pain without an apparent external cause. It includes conditions such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and headaches, and is commonly comorbid with fatigue and altered cognition and mood, and hypersensitive sensations. About 10% of the general population suffer from nociplastic pain.

Because it is a novel condition, our goal is to explore its risk factors. In line with past work from our group, we will apply multivariate statistical models to pain conditions, and link these to risk factors via quasi-experimental designs to isolate unmeasured confounding. The PhD student will lead and conduct four projects in this field, with guidance and support from supervisors.
