- with focus on education and research

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology conducts internationally leading research and education in physiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, intensive care, and related fields. The department offers a strong experimental and translational research environment supported by advanced infrastructure. This position is intended to strengthen the department’s profile in the areas of physical activity, molecular physiology, and the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases.

Description of the subject area

Exercise physiology is an interdisciplinary field that investigates how physical activity, exercise, and physiological strain affect bodily function at the molecular, cellular, and integrated physiological levels. The field encompasses the biological mechanisms underlying adaptation to exercise, physical performance, recovery, and the role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of disease.

For this lectureship, we seek activities within exercise physiology that integrate basic scientific and clinical perspectives and may include both experimental models and human studies. The field is of major importance for the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies in which physical activity is used to improve health and reduce the risk of disease.

Your mission

You are expected to conduct independent and internationally competitive research in exercise physiology, with a focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of exercise and physical activity. The aim is to increase the understanding of how physical activity influences gene regulation, signaling pathways, and cellular function in relation to health and ageing.

The position includes initiating and leading research projects, obtaining external research funding, publishing scientific work, and developing national and international collaborations. You will also contribute to and further develop teaching in physiology and related areas at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, including supervision of degree projects, doctoral students, and postdoctoral researchers.

The Department is responsible for the Master’s Programme in Translational Physiology and Pharmacology and holds course responsibility within the Bachelor’s Programme in Biomedicine as well as several of KI’s professional degree programmes. You are therefore expected to take a leading role in teaching within work physiology and related fields, including course coordination and examiner responsibilities, as well as the planning and delivery of lectures, group-based teaching activities, and examinations.

In addition, you are expected to contribute to pedagogical development, the strategic development of research and education, and collaboration with healthcare, governmental agencies, industry, and other societal stakeholders. You are also expected to contribute to an inclusive and stimulating academic environment.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills and very good scientific skills

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements are stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure and these are applied in relation to the subject area of the established recruitment profile:

See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet.

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • ongoing external research funding obtained as principal applicant in competition.
  • documented scientific skill with internationally recognized research in molecular and/or integrative exercise physiology.
  • strong ability to teach in English and Swedish, as the teaching duties include courses delivered in both languages.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
