The Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR) in Rabat is seeking an education coordinator & social sciences lecturer (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) from 1 July 2025.

Duties

The education coordinator is responsible for organising and co-developing educational activities at NIMAR. As coordinator, you ensure that all Leiden procedures are followed correctly and that education meets Leiden standards. You will be assisted in this by the academic director and the subject teachers. You ensure guidance and support for students during their semester abroad and provide education in the social sciences.

During the academic year 2025 - 2026, the focus of the papers will be on urban planning and water management, within a project that will lead to the development of a city atlas of Rabat. The main duties of the education coordinator include:

  • Co-determining, coordinating and aligning content, timetables, examination, evaluation of NIMAR education;
  • Teaching preparation, quality assurance and registration of study results in consultation with the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University, including contact with examination and programme committees and study coordinators;
  • Taking care of one or more teaching units within the social sciences, including supervising research projects, student fieldwork, checking thematic reports and supervising excursions;
  • Coordinating and co-supervising a field school for MA and PhD students;
  • Coordinating and co-supervising Honours education;
  • Providing guest lectures;
  • Communicating and coordinating with (guest) lecturers and guest speakers, both in terms of content and planning;
  • Contact person for (potential) students regarding registration, education, accommodation and general wellbeing;
  • Informing institutions and students about the education programme, contact with educational institutions and taking care of promotional material;
  • Contributing to the visibility of NIMAR, which includes, among other things, providing input for the social media channels of the institute;
  • Building and maintaining a network of relevant institutions and individuals in Morocco;
  • Facilitating study tours, working visits and study weeks of students of universities and universities of applied sciences (‘WO’ & ‘HBO’);
  • Welcoming groups (students and professionals): providing information on NIMAR activities and Moroccan language or culture;
  • Supporting the MT in organising impact and public activities and reporting.

Profile (knowledge and skills)
You are a representative, resourceful, empathetic and flexible employee who is collegial and service-oriented. You highly value the well-being of the students and care about their general experience during the semester abroad, in addition to their academic development. You have excellent organisational skills and an eye for detail, follow the applicable procedures for registration, registration of results and quality assurance. You have experience in university teaching, possess the ‘BKO’ (University Teaching Qualification) or are willing to obtain it within two years. You collaborate smoothly with colleagues in the Netherlands and Morocco and easily look beyond the borders of your own discipline.

You have:

  • A master's degree in social sciences or humanities (a PhD is desirable);
  • Experience within anthropology and/or in the field of urban planning, water management, area studies is highly recommended;
  • Experience of research and teaching in an interdisciplinary academic environment, where you encourage peer learning;
  • Understanding and knowledge of the Dutch, Moroccan, French and Anglo-Saxon higher education and scientific domain related to the humanities and social sciences;
  • A large network of academics and civil society in Morocco that you can mobilize to contribute to education;
  • Thorough knowledge of Morocco, both academically and practically;
  • Understanding of social developments relevant to NIMAR, Morocco and the Netherlands;
  • Excellent organisational skills, you are able to carefully plan, organise and realize a large event;
  • Empathy and skills in intercultural communication, with students and colleagues;
  • Excellent knowledge of English, good to excellent knowledge of Dutch is highly desirable, knowledge of French and Moroccan Arabic is a plus.

About NIMA
The Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR) is an institute of Leiden University with a national mission. NIMAR offers, under the responsibility of the Leiden University Faculty of Humanities, bachelor’s and master’s programmes on the languages, cultures, religion, and society of Morocco and North Africa. NIMAR facilitates and stimulates scientific research on Morocco and the region and endeavours to make this research accessible to Dutch society. NIMAR also plays a role in building a national library collection on Morocco and the Arab world. NIMAR's staff consists of approximately ten employees and is led by the Director and Institute Manager of NIMAR.
 

We offer
This is not an expat assignment, but a local position with corresponding salary and working conditions from the Dutch Embassy in Morocco.

The monthly salary, depending on education and work experience, amounts to a minimum of MAD 29,952 and a maximum of MAD 44,928 gross based on a full working week of 37 hours for a full-time appointment (scale 8 Rrlok).
