Are you interested in applying computer vision and machine learning to environmental and biodiversity research? LUT University is hiring a post-doctoral researcher to develop analysis methods for environmental and wildlife data, with applications in biodiversity monitoring and sustainable resource use.
What your work will be like
You will focus on research and the development of computer vision and machine learning methods for ecological data analysis. The work includes image-based and multimodal data processing, with applications such as plankton image analysis, sustainable forestry, wildlife monitoring, and animal re-identification.
You will contribute to ongoing projects. Your work includes publishing research results, contributing to research funding proposals, collaborating with national and international partners, and participating in research group meetings and seminars.
In addition to research, you will supervise bachelor’s and master’s theses and contribute to teaching in your field. Teaching responsibilities typically include approximately one course per year and are related to mathematical foundations of machine learning.
You will be part of the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory at the LUT School of Engineering Science. The lab includes approximately 15 researchers and collaborates closely with international partner universities, such as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA) and Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic).
What we expect from you
You have a doctoral degree in computer vision, machine learning, or a closely related field, the ability for independent scientific work, and teaching skills.
We welcome applications from both experienced post-doctoral researchers and early-career candidates, including recent doctoral graduates. Experience in applying computer vision and machine learning to environmental and biodiversity research is considered an advantage. The position requires good English skills and the ability to teach in English.
The position is a part of LUT University's non-tenure track system. The appointment is initially for two years, including a six-month trial period, and may be extended by up to two years based on performance and progress.
What we offer
You will join an internationally oriented research group where you can develop your research profile, collaborate on research projects, and contribute to impactful work at the intersection of computer vision and environmental science.
The job is based in Lappeenranta. A flexible hybrid working model is applied, with regular on-site presence required. The role involves some travel between LUT campuses and to international conferences.
