The UM6P CoreLab

The UM6P CoreLab is a research and service-providing platform managed in a centralized and simplified manner to facilitate access to a wide range of technologies, expertise, and services offered to UM6P researchers and external clients.

The CoreLab is launching an Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) facility, devoted to non-destructive elemental micro-analysis of very small volumes of solid materials. The UM6P Electron Microprobe is the first ever installed in Morocco. The facility will be widely open to research users in Earth and Material Sciences, and other disciplines.

The UM6P CoreLab is hiring a lab Engineer to operate the EPMA facility

 Job Description:

Task:

The EPMA Engineer will ensure the operation and development of an Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) facility equipped with a Field-Emission Gun (FEG) Electron Microprobe.

Main activities:

  • Ensure the implementation of techniques and methods for chemical microanalysis by EPMA,
  • Define, develop, and optimize analytical methods adapted to different needs, including sample preparation processes,
  • Write technical notes and protocols for users, as well as analysis reports,
  • Provide training and supervision to EPMA users; propose training actions, particularly for students.
  • Periodically check and adjust the equipment, and perform the maintenance operations,
  • Diagnose and treat common equipment malfunctions,
  • Ensure technological monitoring in the field of EPMA analyses, and more broadly in the field of elemental micro-analysis and chemical imaging,
  • Draw up specifications for carrying out studies and projects involving EPMA analyses, including, where appropriate, the implementation of new methods and the use of other instruments,

Main skills:

  • Mineralogy, crystal chemistry, crystallography, materials science (basic knowledge),
  • Spectrometric analytical and micro-analytical techniques,
  • Instrument maintenance techniques,
  • IT tools for the exploitation of results,
  • Quality concepts applied to chemical analysis,
  • Professional risks (chemical, electrical, radiation, etc.),
  • Health and safety regulations,
  • Bibliographic research tools,
  • Ability to work in interaction with laboratory users,
  • Ability to transmit knowledge,
  • Ability to negotiate contracts and agreements with public and private actors,
  • Practice of professional networks,
  • Practice of working English.
  • Familiar with lab safety protocols and regulations.

Diploma – training:

Master’s degree, engineer diploma, with training in analytical chemistry, mineralogy, crystal chemistry, materials science, and/or scientific instrumentation.

Experience required:

We are primarily looking for a candidate with several years of experience in Electron Probe MicroAnalysis. Proven experience in related technologies such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and/or Wavelength-Dispersive X-Ray spectrometry (XRF) will also be considered.
