The Faculty of Law at Stellenbosch University (SU) is looking to fill a vacancy in the Department of Private Law. The Department of Private Law is responsible for teaching several of the core modules in the LLB curriculum. This includes the Law of Persons, Family Law, African Customary Law, Law of Succession, Property Law, Law of Civil Procedure, Law of Contract, Law of Delict and Specific Contracts. The Department also offers various electives at final year level and a selection of modules at postgraduate level, including modules which focus on Family Law and Children’s Rights. The Department also has a strong focus on research within these fields as well as other private law areas.

The main responsibility of the incumbent will be to contribute to excellence in the Faculty of Law. The incumbent will lecture primarily in the field of Children’s Rights and Family Law, but will also assume further teaching responsibilities within the Department and Faculty, taking into account relevant factors. The incumbent will furthermore conduct research that focuses on Children’s Rights and/or Family Law and provide postgraduate supervision that focuses on one or both of these areas. The incumbent must also contribute to the administrative functioning of the Faculty, and perform other duties as assigned by the Faculty. 

Duties:

  • Lecturing in Children’s Rights and Family Law, and other law modules.
  • Actively researching, writing and publishing in the assigned field(s) of law.
  • Postgraduate supervision.
  • Contributing to the administrative functioning of the Faculty.
  • Performing such other duties as assigned by the Faculty. 

Requirements: 

  • LLD or an appropriate PhD in Private law (for appointment as Professor, Associate Professor, or Senior Lecturer).
  • An established record of publication in accredited law journals (for appointment as Professor or Associate Professor); at least some publications in accredited law journals (for appointment as Senior Lecturer); or a demonstrated aptitude for research (for appointment as Lecturer).
  • Experience in postgraduate mentorship and supervision (for appointment as Professor, Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer).
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching (for appointment as Professor, Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer) or exposure to the teaching of undergraduate students (for appointment as Lecturer).

Recommendations:

  • A strong interest in research.
    • Good interpersonal relationships.
    • Experience teaching Family Law and/or Children’s Rights at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
    • Postgraduate qualification(s) focusing on Family Law and/or Children’s Rights.
    • Legal practical experience.
    • Multilingualism.
    • NRF rating.
    • Strong academic record. 

Commencement of duties:

01 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter
