The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 180 work at SLF in Davos.

For the Climate Change, Extremes and Natural Hazards in Alpine Regions Research Centre
CERC, which is established as part of the SLF in Davos, we are offering a new  tenure track position starting up on agreement for a

Scientist in Treeline Dynamics and Ecosystem Functions in Mountain Regions 80-100% (f/m/d)

You investigate treeline dynamics and ecosystem functions in mountain regions under global change. By leveraging existing datasets, collecting complementary data, and applying innovative methods, you quantify and predict ecosystem changes near treeline and in adjacent mountain ecosystems. Your research advances the understanding of changing mountain ecosystems and supports more effective planning and implementation of nature-based protection and other measures to optimize ecosystem functions and services. You will develop innovative research projects, seek third-party funding and lead these projects independently as well as in collaboration with researchers in and outside of WSL. Engaging directly with stakeholders helps align your research with practical challenges, making it more applicable in real-world settings and fostering strong cooperationbetween practice, administration, and science. You will supervise MSc- and PhD-students, as well as PostDocs, hired through your third-party funded projects. You will publish in international journals, present your research at international conferences, and contribute to its practical implementation. In this way, you significantly contribute to the further development of this research topic on a national and international level.

You have a PhD degree in forest sciences, ecosystem management, global change ecology, or a related field and a profound interest in mountain ecosystems. You have advanced expertise in statistics and spatial analysis. Additional knowledge in modelling and fieldwork-based methods is an advantage. You are used and willing to work in an interdisciplinary team at the interface between alpine ecology, mountain forest ecology, and other key topics of WSL like natural hazards or ecosystem management. You are well experienced in publishing scientific articles of high international impact. Furthermore, you are fluent in English and a Swiss national language.

Please send your complete application to Clemens Güdel, Human Resources SLF, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Peter Bebi (phone: +41 (0)81 417 02 73, email:bebi(at)slf.ch), will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. WSL is committed to diversity and inclusion as core values.
