Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our university community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en
The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University is inviting applications for two tenure-track positions (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) in integrated photonics and related fields.
Photonics is the science and technology of generating, controlling, and detecting light. It spans a wide range of applications, from communications and information processing to sensing and industrial uses. The Photonics Laboratory at the Physics Unit of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) advances the fundamental knowledge of light interaction with novel materials and nanostructures, the development of photonic materials, devices and solutions, addressing major scientific and societal challenges.
Photonics is one of the strongest research directions at Tampere University (TAU). As an example, the national PREIN Flagship program on photonics is coordinated by TAU. Further, TAU was recently selected to be one of the sites for an EU pilot line aiming to develop integration technologies for Wide Bandgap materials to support the volume manufacturing of semiconductor chips. The pilot line at TAU will provide an environment for testing integrated photonics and microelectronics solutions in the same packaged system. Integrated photonics and microelectronics have been selected as a strategic profiling area of TAU to be further strengthened by new tenure-track appointments during 2025-2030.
Job description
The Photonics Laboratory has strong background in optoelectronics, epitaxy, nanofabrication, and integration of a wide range of III/V-semiconductors. We also carry out leading-edge work on, e.g., nonlinear optics, ultrafast photonics, spectroscopic applications, metamaterials, and quantum optics.
We are looking for candidates who can establish independent research activities at TAU to complement our present research. We will give special attention to candidates who have strong expertise in the following sub-fields or a combination thereof:
If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development, and student supervision.
You are expected to pursue and supervise research in your topical area. Active collaboration with local, national, and global research partners, as well as industry is encouraged. You are expected to secure external funding for your research as well as nurture interactions with relevant stakeholders for societal impact.
Requirements
You should have a doctoral degree and demonstrated research experience in one of the sub-fields mentioned above. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research in academia. Further requirements for each tenure-track level are as follows:
Assistant Professor

We offer
We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. The multidisciplinary research environment offers opportunities to develop research expertise via collaboration with different fields of engineering and natural sciences. We offer world-class infrastructure in photonics that is directly available for research groups through open-access principles.
Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member after the first five-year period. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
You will be supported by a start-up package that will ease your transition to TAU and in setting up your research group. The start-up package will be negotiated based on your individual needs.
Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4700-5200 EUR/month, for an Associate Professor approximately 5400-6100 EUR/month, and for a Professor approximately 6500-7300 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.
We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts.
