About Our Department: The Fritz Haber Research Center (FHRC), established in 1981 by the Minerva Foundation and the Hebrew University, is a renowned center for molecular dynamics and theoretical chemistry. Named after Fritz Haber, a Jewish-German chemist who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, it has been instrumental in advancing theoretical research in molecular reaction dynamics and fostering strong collaborations with German scientists. The Center is known globally for its significant contributions to chemical and materials sciences.

About Our Research: The research project is a collaboration between the Fritz Haber Research Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Center of Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS) at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf in Görlitz, Germany. 

This project aims to develop and apply novel, temperature-dependent approximations for electron-electron interactions using density-functional theory (DFT), with a specific focus on warm dense matter (WDM). WDM represents an exciting and challenging frontier between condensed matter and plasma physics. 

Our research benefits from close ties with experimental partner institutions, such as the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields at the European XFEL, allowing us to benchmark and apply our methodology in realistic X-ray scattering experiments.

Job Description: We are looking for a talented and highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to join our research team. The selected candidate will work on the development and application of advanced DFT methods tailored for studying warm dense matter, under the joint supervision of Dr. Eli Kraisler (FHRC) and Dr. Attila Cangi (CASUS). This position offers the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research at the interface of condensed matter and plasma physics. The position is fully funded, with a flexible start date.

About Your Supervisors: Dr. Eli Kraisler is a leading researcher in the field of electronic structure theory, affiliated with the Fritz Haber Research Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He completed his doctoral studies at the Hebrew University and has extensive experience in density functional theory, particularly in developing new theoretical approaches for complex systems. Dr. Kraisler collaborates closely with international research centers and experimental groups, fostering an interdisciplinary approach to studying electronic structures and warm dense matter. 

Dr. Attila Cangi is a renowned researcher in computational physics and quantum mechanics, specializing in electronic structure theory and the development of advanced methods for modeling complex materials and systems. He has published extensively in high-impact journals and has contributed significantly to understanding quantum phenomena and material behavior, earning recognition for his innovative approaches in theoretical physics.

Dr. Kraisler and Dr. Attila Cangi are passionate about guiding young researchers in their scientific journey and maintaining a collaborative and dynamic research environment.

Funding: Monthly salary 8000 ILS.

Your Profile (To excel in this role, we seek candidates with):

  • A Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field.
  • Proven ability in theory development or scientific software development.
  • Strong motivation to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Prior knowledge of many-electron theory, density-functional theory, or warm dense matter is an advantage.
  • A strong publication record is an advantage.
