Professor of Modern German-language Literature

Job Description

The professorship focuses its research and teaching on German-language literature from the 18th century to the present day.  Subject-specific areas of focus include literary and cultural theory, aesthetics and poetics, literature and mediality as well as the relationship between literature and knowledge.

Research and teaching are enhanced through practical cooperation partnerships with the Franz Nabl Institute for Literary Research and the House of Literature Graz, whose wide range of events provides a public showcase for academic discourse. Further existing partnerships, such as those with the Centre of Jewish Studies, the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Aging and Care and the Department of Digital Humanities, will be continued and strengthened, as will participation in doctoral programmes at the University of Graz (e.g. Visual Cultures and Intermediality, Transformations of the Human).

The successful candidate will be fully responsible for the subject area of Modern German-Language Literature, with a clear focus on literary theory and/or the history and theories of literary aesthetics, and will contribute to enhancing the international profile of German Language and Literature.

The successful candidate will be involved in the “Dimensions of Europe” research area and/or in one of the Faculty of Humanities’ two priority research areas (“Perception: Episteme, Aesthetics, Politics” or “Trans-Mediterranean Entanglements”).

Employment Requirements

• Austrian or equivalent foreign higher education degree corresponding with the position (doctorate/PhD)
• Habilitation or equivalent qualification in Modern German-language Literature
• Outstanding academic qualifications in research and teaching in the relevant discipline and for the profile of the professorship (commensurate with stage of academic career and interruptions in employment due to caring responsibilities)
• Success in attracting subject-specific project grants, particularly where competitively awarded third-party funds are concerned
• Research staff leadership experience (Department or projects)
• Experience in the supervision and guidance of early-stage researchers
• Professional experience abroad during academic career
• Skills in higher education didactics including the use of digital media
• Gender mainstreaming and diversity management skills
• International networking within the field
• Excellent knowledge of German, very good knowledge of English

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, aiming for academic excellence and integrity in research and teaching. He/she will have demonstrated ability to collaborate constructively in a responsible manner and inspire colleagues and students in an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented context.

The minimum remuneration as stated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement is € 93,986.20 gross per year. Salary subject to negotiation.
