Your role

The UBIX Research Group is searching a PhD candidate to work on data-driven sustainable energy systems.

The successful candidate will join the UBIX Research Group, led by Prof. Raphaël Frank, and work in close collaboration with the academic and industrial partners in ongoing projects focusing on energy transition. This PhD project will focus on the development of predictive models for energy demand and production. These models will leverage techniques such as time series analysis and machine learning and will be integrated into a digital twin platform. The aim is to enhance planning for short- to long-term energy system deployment scenarios in Luxembourg.

You will perform the following tasks:

  • Conduct a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of energy forecasting techniques and data requirements for energy related profiles
  • Develop integrated predictive models for energy related profiles, incorporating real-time, scenario-specific data
  • Evaluate the complementarity of different energy sources using tailored statistical metrics and indices
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present findings at international conferences, and collaborate with project partners to identify requirements and validate solutions

Your profile

Education: MSc degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Engineering

Experience: The ideal candidate should have some knowledge and/or experience in several of the following key topics:

  • Energy System Technologies
  • Digital Twin Platforms and Data Analytics
  • Predictive Models & Explainable AI (XAI) Methods in Time Series Forecasting
  • Data Retrieval and Processing
  • Time Series Analysis, Clustering, and Decomposition Techniques
  • Real-Time Data Integration and Pattern Recognition
  • Hands-on Experience with Sensors and Data Collection Devices
  • EU Energy Platforms

Hard Skills: Programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar) are required

Soft Skills: Most importantly, we seek individuals who are curiosity-driven, eager to continuously learn and explore new ideas while collaborating with a team!

Language Skills: Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required. French, German or Luxembourgish will be an asset.
