The International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) is a joint international PhD Program of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) and the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne.

Research explores the relationship between the modern economy and its social and political foundations. Building on a long tradition in sociology and political science, the school aims to combine and develop the approaches of new economic sociology, comparative political economy, organization studies and history.

The curriculum combines sociology, political science and organization studies, focussing especially on economic sociology and comparative political economy.

The IMPRS-SPCE is jointly financed by theMax Planck Society and the University of Cologne.

Doctoral fellowships in economic sociology and political economy

The IMPRS-SPCE invites suitable candidates to apply. Applicants must hold a Diplom or a Masters degree in political science, sociology, organization studies or related fields. Program details and the online application form can be found here. Deadline for applications is February 28.

MPIfG doctoral program rated excellent

The MPIfG was rated "excellent" in the category "promotion of young researchers" by the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat) in April 2008. In the Council's pilot study of 57 sociology departments and sociological research organizations in Germany only four institutions received the top rating for their graduate training.
