The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 19 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

The ESRF provides access to state-of-the art facilities for diffraction, solution scattering and cryo-electron microscopy experiments in Structural Biology. These include 5 refurbished beamlines dedicated to macromolecular crystallography (MX) and a new beamline dedicated to room-temperature serial crystallography, as part of the ESRF Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS).

As a Beamline Scientist, your responsibilities will include:

- Managing the day-to-day operation and the scientific development of the ESRF's MASSIF-3 beamline, contributing to the development of instrumentation, software, and methods that will be crucial for all Structural Biology Group's MX facilities in the post-EBS ESRF.

- Supporting external user research by acting as Local Contact on MASSIF-3 and the other ESRF MX beamlines.

- Developing and contributing to in-house research programmes that explore the potential of ID30A-3. Prospective research areas include advancing next-generation optogenetic tools and neurobiological applications by investing the structure and mechanisms of photoreceptors. In this role, you will also collaborate on and contribute to ongoing methodologies within the Structural Biology Group, such as multi-crystal data collection, room-temperature time-resolved MX and in crystallo optical spectroscopy.

Further information may be obtained from M. Nanao ([email protected]) or C. Mueller-Dieckmann  ([email protected]).

- PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Biophysics, Biology or closely related field.

- Strong background in macromolecular crystallography data collection and analysis.

- Background in photobiology research.

- Experience with large-scale facility instrumentation development and commissioning.

- Background in serial crystallography and/or in crystallo spectroscopy.

- Interest in new method development.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary staff and facility users.

- Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF).

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
