ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

For this project, you will work as part of the “AlUla Inscriptions Corpus Analysis Project (AICAP).” This is a four-year collaboration between Ghent University and the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), which started in May 2024. The project will develop an online, accessible, long-term database of the inscriptions documented by the RCU in the AlUla County, in Saudi Arabia. The inscriptions include texts from as early as the 6th century BC up to modern Arabic graffiti.

The goal of the project is to digitize and analyze the thousands of inscriptions that the RCU collected to understand and share AlUla's rich, intercultural history through the inscriptions of its historical residents and visitors, while also shedding new light on, among others, Ancient North Arabian languages and Arabic. The project will also contribute to capacity building and public outreach programming in AlUla.

YOUR TASKS

Outreach and education are important and highly valued elements of the AICAP project. As a part of AICAP‘s outreach program the project will put together an online exhibition to highlight the inscriptions from AlUla County. As curator for this exhibition, you will be responsible for selecting the materials to be displayed in the online exhibition, and for creating narrative scripting around the objects, with the input of the different researchers that work on the different languages represented in the corpus. Since the corpus mostly consists of graffiti, and includes few monumental inscriptions, the narrative scripting of the exhibition will play an important role in the presentation of the exhibition.

  • You will contribute to the selection of the objects for the online exhibition in collaboration with different stakeholders,
  • You will be responsible for putting together a narrative that will contextualize and highlight the selected objects,
  • You will collaborate with the IT-team to organize and shape the online exhibition website,
  • You will collaborate with the IT-team to text the exhibition website.

  • You hold a Master’s degree in archaeology or the history of the Ancient Near East (Levant, Mesopotamia, and Arabian Peninsula), art history of the region, or a related field of study.
  • You have demonstrable knowledge of the history of the region,
  • You have demonstrable experience organizing and developing historical/archaeological exhibitions,
  • You are creative and have a passion for telling stories centering objects,
  • You preferably have experience organizing online exhibitions,
  • Your written and spoken English is sufficient for effective communication,
  • A level of Arabic that will allow you to offer the exhibition texts in Arabic as well as in English is highly valued for this position.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration for the period of three months.
  •  Your contract will start on 1/10/2025 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate).  Click here for more information about our salary scales.
