Experimental studies indicate that irregular road surfaces significantly affect the safety and comfort of cyclists. Road irregularities induce high-magnitude vibrations in the cyclist’s body, which are not mitigated by suspension systems since city bikes typically lack them. These vibrations are especially concerning children transported by bike — whether in a carrier or cargo bike — as the accelerations experienced in these setups are amplified. However, there is limited research quantifying the effects of such vibrations on children’s health, and (dis)comfort. Furthermore, no standardized process exists for assessing these impacts. Current studies often focus on seat surface vibration measurements without accounting for body kinematics, despite head motion being a critical factor for comfort. Additionally, no real world human experiments have been conducted to evaluate children’s biomechanical and subjective responses to vibrations.
The aim of this project is to understand the contribution of uneven road surfaces on children’s whole-body vibrations, health and comfort while being driven by bicycle carriers and cargo bikes and how recent bicycle carriers and cargo bikes with different designs and suspensions reduce or amplify such vibrations.
