Project

The aim of this project is to revolutionize the design of magnetic components, such as transformers and inductors, through the implementation of automated tools powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. This project focuses on streamlining the design process, significantly reducing time and cost while improving the performance and efficiency of magnetic components used in power electronics.

The proposed PhD position will concentrate on the development and application of these automated design tools, with an emphasis on practical, industry-relevant solutions. The PhD candidate will engage in active collaboration with industry partners, participate in academic discussions, and contribute to funded-project applications. Leveraging existing models and expertise within the research group, the candidate will work alongside other researchers to refine and enhance the automated design processes.

Key activities and responsibilities include:

1. Developing Automated Design Algorithms: Creating and testing algorithms that can automatically generate optimized designs for magnetic components based on specific requirements and constraints.

2. Integrating AI and Machine Learning: Applying advanced machine learning techniques to improve the accuracy and efficiency of design predictions and optimizations.

3. Collaborating with Industry: Working closely with industry partners to ensure that the developed tools meet real-world needs and can be seamlessly integrated into existing workflows.

4. Participating in Research and Development: Engaging in collaborative research projects, contributing to academic publications, and presenting findings at conferences and industry forums.

5. Enhancing Existing Models: Building on the research group’s existing power converter models to incorporate new findings and improve overall design methodologies.

The successful candidate will benefit from the research group’s comprehensive resources, including access to state-of-the-art laboratories and computational facilities. This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in power electronics, with a direct impact on industry practices and the development of more efficient, cost-effective magnetic components.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and communicative researcher with a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. The candidate should have obtained excellent study results.

The candidate should have a strong interest in energy, with knowledge in power electronics, modelling, design of power converters, control, and experience with experimental setups. Experience with Matlab/Simulink, LTSpice, and PSIM is highly valued. Applicants should also have good English communication skills. Dutch proficiency is not required; however, its study is encouraged during the PhD program.

Note. In case of being selected. if the candidate got the Master’s Degree from a University outside of the EU, an English proficiency certificate, an English translation and apostille of the diploma and official transcriptions are required for admission.

Offer

This research is to be performed within the framework of EnergyVille, a research collaboration on sustainable energy between KU Leuven, VITO, imec and UHasselt.

The successful candidate will be offered a PhD fellowship to become part of our team to work towards a PhD. This full-time mandate has an initial duration of one year which can be prolonged depending on the PhD performance. The final goal will be to obtain a PhD after four years.
