The Department of Civil Law, Foreign and Private International Law deals with all fields of classic civil law, with European private law (Centre for European Private Law), with private international law and international procedural law, comparative private law, digitalisation, as well as with interdisciplinary research in private law (business, economics and social sciences, psychology, informatics), particularly in the framework of the University’s field of excellence “Smart Regulation”. 

At the Department of Civil Law, Foreign and Private International Law at the Faculty of Law, the University of Graz is seeking to appoint a

Professor of Civil Law and European Private Law

(40 hours per week; selection procedure in accordance with Section 98 of the Universities Act (UG); permanent employment according to the Austrian Law on Salaried Employment (AngG); expected starting date October 1st 2026)

The professorship is part of the strategic positioning of the Faculty of Law which includes the following objectives: innovation, interdisciplinarity and internationalisation. With this professorship, the faculty is strengthening its expertise in the field of private law. The position entails the ability to represent Austrian civil law in research and teaching, with particular emphasis on its integration into European private law. Additionally, connections to other private law disciplines, comparative law, or interdisciplinary research are desirable. The professor will attract third-party funds for national and international research projects. Furthermore, the successful candidate will contribute to the university’s profile development as well as to university-wide and faculty-specific core research areas. Participation in the Faculty’s doctoral programmes, in particular the doctoral programme “European Private Law”, is expected.

Employment requirements:

  • Austrian or equivalent foreign higher education degree corresponding with the position (doctorate/PhD)
  • Habilitation in Austrian civil law or equivalent qualification
  • Outstanding academic qualifications in research and teaching in the relevant discipline and for the profile of the professorship (commensurate with stage of academic career and interruptions in employment due to caring responsibilities)
  • Success in attracting subject-specific project grants, particularly where competitively awarded third-party funds are concerned
  • Skills in higher education didactics including the use of digital media
  • Skills in the supervision and guidance of early stage researchers
  • Professional experience abroad during academic career
  • Management and leadership experience
  • Gender mainstreaming and diversity management skills
  • Outstanding knowledge of German and English is mandatory, other languages are desirable

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, aiming for academic excellence and integrity in research and teaching. He/she will have demonstrated ability to collaborate constructively in a responsible manner and inspire colleagues and students in an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented context.

Salary scheme of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff (Universitäten-KV): A1

Minimum salary

The minimum remuneration as stated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement is EUR 92.460,20 gross per year. Salary subject to negotiation.
