Launching in 2025, ELLIS Institute Finland is the second institute of ELLIS, the pan-European AI network of excellence.

The ELLIS Institute builds on the long track record of pioneering machine learning research in Finland, most recently at the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence. Since 2019, FCAI has hosted ELLIS Unit Helsinki, the local node of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) that has evolved into the Institute. ELLIS Institute Finland operates in partnership with Finnish universities, RDI organizations and businesses, creating a bold new ecosystem of artificial intelligence and machine learning research. Funding comes from Finland's Ministry of Education and Culture, partner organizations and private sources, such as Foundation PS. Through our close association with CSC – IT Center for Science, we have access to excellent computing resources, including the LUMI supercomputer and the European AI Factory.

Located in Otaniemi in the city of Espoo, the Institute is surrounded by a unique blend of cutting-edge research, a dynamic business environment with multinational companies, and beautiful natural surroundings. The area offers excellent connectivity, with Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, Finland’s main international gateway, 25 minutes away by car and Helsinki city center just 12 minutes away via metro.

About the ELLIS network

ELLIS is a pan-European AI network of excellence. It builds upon machine learning as the driver for modern AI and aims to secure lasting international leadership of AI made in Europe by connecting top researchers in this field and by creating a multi-centric AI research laboratory. Founded in 2018, ELLIS has grown into a network of two institutes and more than 40 ELLIS units at world-class institutions in 17 countries, 16 ELLIS programs and a pan-European PhD program. The members of ELLIS are committed to shaping the future of AI in Europe by pushing the scientific and technological boundaries for human-centered, beneficial and safe AI.
