Do you want to build hydrogels that interact with their environment and self-optimise to particular tasks? Do you enjoy exploring systems chemistry, reaction networks and self-assembly in out-of-equilibrium matter and smart materials? Then come and join our team as a PhD candidate!

Materials that spontaneously ’morph their structure and optimise themselves to particular functions will open entirely new possibilities in adaptive materials or soft robotics. Imagine interactive hydrogels that self-assemble from a ’’design-less’ state and can get their morphology optimised to perform targeted mechanical operations upon swelling and contraction – in analogy to muscles.

This PhD project aims to develop a unique chemistry-based strategy to build interactive actuators based on electro-responsive hydrogels. These gels concomitantly self-assemble amongst electrodes and guide the control mechanisms that in turn direct their growth and actuation. As the self-assembly of the hydrogels is reversible, the input voltages (+/–) applied to the electrodes can be optimised in a machine-learning approach to optimise the gel morphology and the embedded stimuli-transduction pathways towards the targeted mechanical behaviour. Departing from classical hydrogels that simply swell or contract, far more complex spatiotemporal actuation routines will be established, emerging from the transient formation of redox-chemistry based cross-links, electro-responsive assemblies that provide conductive pathways to transfer the input voltages to the hydrogel growth/actuation front, and feedback mechanisms based on chemical reaction networks and supramolecular assemblies.

This research combines hydrogels with systems chemistry – i.e. reaction networks, self-assembly – in mesoscale structures and out-of-equilibrium matter, and involves working with dedicated microscopy techniques and custom-made multi-electrode set-ups. You will communicate your findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences, and also be involved in training and teaching BSc and MSc students. Your teaching load may be up to 10% of your appointment.

Additional employment conditions

Work and science require good employment practices. Radboud University's primary and secondary employment conditions reflect this. You can make arrangements for the best possible work-life balance with flexible working hours, various leave arrangements and working from home. You are also able to compose part of your employment conditions yourself. For example, exchange income for extra leave days and receive a reimbursement for your sports membership. In addition, you receive a 34% discount on the sports and cultural activities at Radboud University as an employee. And, of course, we offer a good pension plan. We also give you plenty of room and responsibility to develop your talents and realise your ambitions. Therefore, we provide various training and development schemes.

We are

You will be part of the Life-like Materials research group and work with Dr Peter Korevaar. Our group is dedicated to build chemical systems that self-organize at the mesoscale, and your project will benefit from our experience with hydrogel actuators, surfactant assembly and assemblies controlled by electrochemistry. Our group is embedded in the Physical-Organic Chemistry department at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands), and part of the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM). Our labs are housed in the Huygens building and equipped with state-of-the-art instruments to conduct top-notch research in the field of active matter, molecular self-assembly and dynamic materials.

Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science (FNWI), part of Radboud University, engages in groundbreaking research and excellent education. In doing so, we push the boundaries of scientific knowledge and pass that knowledge on to the next generation.
We seek solutions to major societal challenges, such as cybercrime and climate change and work on major scientific challenges, such as those in the quantum world. At the same time, we prepare our students for careers both within and outside the scientific field.
Currently, more than 1,300 colleagues contribute to research and education, some as researchers and lecturers, others as technical and administrative support officers. The faculty has a strong international character with staff from more than 70 countries. Together, we work in an informal, accessible and welcoming environment, with attention and space for personal and professional development for all.
Radboud University
At Radboud University, we aim to make an impact through our work. We achieve this by conducting groundbreaking research, providing high-quality education, offering excellent support, and fostering collaborations within and outside the university. In doing so, we contribute indispensably to a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all. To accomplish this, we need even more colleagues who, based on their expertise, are willing to search for answers. We advocate for an inclusive community and welcome employees with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Will you also contribute to making the world a little better?
