PhD position: Development of an in vitro platform to investigate glioma – neuron interactions

We are seeking a highly motivated, proactive and enthusiastic student for a PhD project in the Bio Engineering Laboratory who will want to work in an international environment.in the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich in Basel, Switzerland.

Project background

Within a project supported by the Swiss Cancer Research foundation, the student will investigate the intricate bidirectional interactions between glioma and neuronal cells.

Job description

The student will develop physiologically relevant cell culture models to recapitulate the glioma microenvironment in vitro. The functional characterization of neurons will be carried out using a diverse set of experimental techniques developed in our laboratory, ranging from large scale electrophysiological recordings using high-density microelectrode arrays (HD-MEAs) through patch clamping to high-resolution functional microscopy. The resulting large datasets will yield a comprehensive understanding of how glioma cells interact with neuronal networks and, reciprocally, how neuronal activity influences glioma progression.

Cell-culture and biological facilities, high-resolution microscopes, and a broad spectrum of engineering and testing equipment are available in the group.

Your profile

The successful candidate should have a background in biology or biomedical engineering. Prior exposure to working with neuronal networks, iPSC differentiation and cancer biology as well as knowledge of programming tools and data analysis methods are important assets.

Being successful in the interdisciplinary field of neural networks and cancer research requires good communication skills and a proactive work attitude. The candidate must be able to fluently communicate in English (oral and written) and be willing to work in a highly interactive and collaborative international environment. Academic excellence, a professional work attitude, and a self-driven nature are expected.

The position is fully funded for 4 years; the starting date is flexible but must be before September 2024.
