Project description

Third-cycle subject:

Within the Competence Center NEXT, we seek three doctoral students who are interested in enabling innovative characterization methodologies at large-scale synchrotron and neutron facilities within the field of physical and mechanical metallurgy. Supplementary experimental work and computational modelling will take place in the home laboratory.

The NEXT Competence Center has 24 partners from academia, research institutes, companies and infrastructures to jointly work within research on innovative materials engineering solutions for current industrial sustainability challenges, for instance, research related to electrification of the transport sector, sustainable manufacturing via additive manufacturing (3D printing) and development of experimental methodology and analysis for effective evaluation of advanced high-throughput experiments.

Link for further information about the Competence Center NEXT: Neutron and X-ray science for industrial technology transitions (NEXT) | KTH.

Briefly about the three projects:

Macro/micro- stress evolution in complex microstructures of steels under cyclic loadings in electric vehicles. This project will implement in- situ measurements to investigate the mechanical response of surface hardened steels with different types of complex microstructures. The main interest is to understand the evolution of stress and damage, which leads to fatigue failure. This understanding can aid the development of improved materials and processes for optimal fatigue resistance.

Experimental and computational investigation of additive manufacturing with the help of synchrotron measurements to address current sustainability challenges in metal additive manufacturing. This project aims to develop novel Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approaches to be implemented for designing novel materials and processes for additive manufacturing via reliable models that have been calibrated and validated using in-situ synchrotron measurements.

High-throughput synchrotron measurements to accelerate the development of new materials and processes. This project is focused on developing new methodologies for high-throughput experiments by synchrotron x-ray measurements. These methodologies will then be used to build ICME databases and models to accelerate sustainable materials development.

Supervision: Peter Hedström and Greta Lindwall is proposed to supervise the doctoral students. Decisions are made on admission

What we offer

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge
  • MSc in Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Target degree: Doctoral degree

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
