Assistant Professorship in Energy Meteorology (W1) with tenure track (W2) (f/m/d)

The University of Cologne is one of the oldest and largest universities in Germany. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences comprises six departments with about 200 professors and 10,000 students and is one of the largest faculties in the country. 

YOUR TASKS 

The successful candidate will represent the field of energy meteorology within the Department of Geosciences and will contribute to research, teaching and academic administration of the Faculty. Involvement in the Hans-Ertel-Centre for Weather Research (HErZ) with the German Weather Service (DWD) and the Center for Earth System Observations and Computational Analysis (CESOC) is expected. Collaboration with the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences regarding the integration of meteorological impact in advanced energy models like grid models or energy market models is desired. Moreover, the successful candidate may join the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) on a part-time basis. In addition to basic meteorological modules, teaching connected to the research field of energy meteorology is expected. 

YOUR PROFILE 

We seek a highly motivated candidate with a background in meteorology, physics or similar disciplines and experience in basic or applied research related to highly variable renewable energy sources, i.e., solar and wind energy. Possible research topics include, but are not limited to, forecasting of renewable energies on various scales, characterizing variability in a changing climate, extreme events. The use of state-of-the art observations and/or complex modelling in connection with high-performance computing is advantageous. The successful candidate has a very good academic track record for the career stage and (inter-) national recognition. Interest in interdisciplinary research is expected and first experience in acquiring funding and teaching is desirable.

The position (of a Juniorprofessorin / Juniorprofessor) is available at the earliest possible date. Formal requirements are detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW).

In the third year after entering into office, an interim evaluation is held. This serves as the basis for the decision as to whether an extension for a further three years will be granted to the candidate. At the latest, a final evaluation is held in the sixth year after entering into office. On this basis, a decision will be reached as to whether the candidate will be given tenure at W2 level. Both evaluations are carried out according to the Regulations for Quality Assurance in Tenure Track Procedures at the University of Cologne. W1 professorships comprise a teaching load of four hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per semester) in the first qualification phase and five hours per week in the second qualification phase. As a rule, W2 professorships comprise a teaching load of nine semester hours per week.
