Postdoc or PhD student position in Disease Ecology
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher or a PhD student in the Academy of Finland funded project “Drivers of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in natural populations”. The focus of the project is on interactions between the tick-borne pathogen Borrelia afzelii and its tick vector and the main rodent reservoir and other mammalian hosts. The project exploits existing datasets and also carries out field studies to acquire novel data. The postdoc/PhD student can focus either on field studies or modelling using existing data or a combination of both, depending on the candidate’s skills and preferences. The project is a collaboration with the Principal Investigator Eva Kallio (University of Oulu), Andy Fenton (University of Liverpool), Otso Huitu (Natural Resources Institute Finland), Tapio Mappes (University of Jyväskylä).
The postdoc position is available from 1st September 2018 for 2 years with a possibility for an extension. The postdoc candidate will hold a PhD in ecology, disease ecology, epidemiology or related fields.
The PhD student position is available for 4 years, starting by 1st September 2018. The PhD student will have a Master’s degree in ecology, evolutionary biology, parasitology or related fields and be eligible for doctoral studies (http://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/requirements_for_admission).
The candidate for either position is expected to have good written and oral skills in English and be highly organized and responsible for good communication and team working. The following qualifications and experience are considered as an advantage: managing and analyzing large datasets, statistical or mathematical modelling (e.g. in R, MATLAB), experience in applying GIS-data on biological systems, experience in field work, animal handling and/or molecular methods (e.g. DNA extraction, qPCR).
The salary will be based on the levels 2 – 4 for a PhD student and on levels 5 – 6 for a postdoc of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific component). Depending on the appointee’s experience and qualifications, the starting salary is 2300 - 2500 €/month for a PhD student and 3300-3700 €/month for a postdoc and increases with experience. Health care is provided by the employer.
